I know everyone is shitting on Sh/Sw but all this talk made me want to play an older one so I'm going for B/W since I never played them but I have some questions.
Which is the better version?
Should I play normal or go with the Blaze and Volt romhacks?
What starter should I go with?

Doesn't matter, box it at earliest convenience. They're some of the worst starters as far as in-game usefulness goes, and there are so many good Pokemon to catch over the course of the playthrough.

Depends on the version exclusives. Black has Mandibuzz and White has Braviary for example.

Play normal, then the romhacks if you feel like playing them again. Blaze Black 2/Volt White 2 have every version-exclusive feature unlocked but you have to save the game before you're given the keys.

BW2 is one of the best games with the best postgame
But experiencing BW first is the proper way to do it since its a sequel, and you need to do the data sync after playing BW to import your info over to BW2 which unlocks a bunch of content in BW2, including hidden cutscenes and bonus battles with old trainers.

As for the other bullshit
Pick whatever version you want
Play it normal so you can do data sync
Pick whatever starter you want.

Oshawott. The water selection is pretty lackluster compared to the fire and grass options given to you.
