I find myself replaying those games every now and again, and always get annoyed with I try to challenge Whitney and I can't because I forgot I needed to get the radio card first for some reason.

Still, have to give them credit for how great those games look. Really brought Johto to live in the way 8 year old me would've wanted.

that's my bro on the left, who was cut from the newest gen.
In response I'm cutting anything GF releases from now. I'd rather play endless fan mods of classic games with my favourites than soulless nu-pokemon that ignores everything that made the series shine for me - particularly the pokemon that fought with me for years.

The soul meme is tired but I do honestly think that the sprite system worked better. It was a hell of a lot simpler. Think of what they could do with them now on more advanced consoles? Paper Mario managed to get away with using 'retro' graphics, in a sense. Why can't Pokemon? In the last several years we've seen plenty of retro games. It seems to me that Pokemon works best in 2D with sprites. To move to 3D it needs a MASSIVE budget to really do it well.

3D really has sucked the soul out of it since it removed any sense of discovery each gen and stripped almost every Pokemon of their personality.

Instead of looking forward to new, higher resolution sprites with new poses and expressions, you know it'll be the same models and animation loops for the foreseeable future. There's no novelty in seeing the old Pokemon re-imagined in a new generation.

I hate this image because people attribute third version quality to the directors when 90% of the heavy lifting was already done for them. Game Freak chose them specifically because it's a smaller project that's mostly refinements, while the "main director" (Masuda/Ohmori) worked on the next generation

its not 3D's fault, its gamefreak's fault for being lazy with the models, animation, and overall modernization.
For fucking niggers sake even when they brought it to 3D everything was god damn gridbased still and it was that way until SM. And even then it still doesnt feel like a proper JRPG game. It feels like you're playing a GBA game with 3D graphics

Stylistic choice due to the theme of the game, paper mario isn't everyone's cup of tea. As for pokemon, it's also not even remotely cost effective to make sprites for over 800 pokemon each with unique keyframed animations. Why do it when you can just achieve better results in 3D
