Imo those games were peak soul, good amount of content and even the gimmicky stuff felt fun (Pokewalker, Pokelympics)
Could also just be my bias though, gen 2 was already my favorite before the remakes and I enjoyed playing them with my friends a lot back then.

Because Pokemon going 3D was a huge mistake. GameFreak cannot do 3D games, but they can do excellent 2D spritework. That's why the DS era games are so much better than their 3DS era games.

Even before the remakes gen 2 was considered the series peak(in more ways than one) and with actual effort put into updating them it's no surprise the remakes turned out as great as they did.

In Goldenrod City, the flower shop will give you a Berry Pots item. You can plant berries in it and carry it around with you. Pretty convenient.

Ohmori happened. He stopped being a game/map designer and shoulda stayed as one.

If you noticed, the games started going downhill the moment he got promoted which happened with XY with him being a planning director in the games

I had never played gsc but hgss felt like pretty great games and I remember actually enjoying the music
it had all the features and all the content and lots of qol goodness
