Well you can pick the up relatively cheap. I saw Let's Go Pikachu for something like 15$ the other day. It's not the best game, and you can easily overlevel your team but shiny hunting was enjoyable.

Rotate your Pokemon so that they don't get overleveled. Don't teach your partner more than one special move. That should make the difficulty comparable to FRLG, if not sometimes better.
