What the actual fuck, Game Freak. Your new models have /more/ vertices but the /same/ amount of triangles/faces as the previous models? Where the fuck do these extra vertices go? How are they used in any way other than just increasing file size??

afaik, vertices are used to make more accurate models
but i'm not an expert, and I'm probably wrong, since new models seems identical to 3ds

It's the same thing

6000 * 3 = 18000
Other than a couple of exceptions, almost every triangle has its own vertices separately

To make 6000 triangles with only 4000 vertices, they probably merged not just vertices that were in the same position but also vertices that were very close.

The version with 4000 vertices is a simplified version.

That only works if these vertices are connected to form faces / triangles. But the amount of faces remains the exact same. You'd just have a bunch of extra points in the model, but if they're not connected to form faces... they don't appear as extra detail. They don't appear at all. So, no, you're not an expert, far from it.

To guarantee that there are "unused vertices" you would need 18967 vertices but there are only 18630.

This looks like an importing error on either the ripper's side, or gamefreak's, and if it's from gamefreak then that suddenly lends some pretty good evidence to the "we fucked up our model importer and don't know how to fix it" leak that was floating around last night

Could be the ripper. Ripping scripts for Smash 4 and Ultimate split vertices that should rightfully be connected if different parts of that mesh have multiple UV mapping "islands".

It's plausible in multiple ways, starting from the fact that they still are 10+ years behind the industry in 3D, even if Creatures does their models. It's no coincidence the sprites look amazing while models look flat as hell sometimes

if the vertices are higher but triangles are the same it could be because the model fucked up during export (not surprizing since it's game freak) and it doubled or more the ammount of vertices but didn't connect them thus they don't form triangles are as such aren't visible, so they are there but just wasting space in the game data and even gpu processing since the game has to calculate which of the vertices are visible

3D modeler here, that's not possible. I remember when I was dealing with model rips, a lot of the raw models were /literally/ ripped, so there were a lot of edges and vertices overlapping because of all the weird tears.
To I guarantee that model on the right would have the same number of vertices if the whole thing was selected in a modeling program and the "remove doubles" tool was used.
