It's poorly balanced.

Early on, you're overlevel. Then there's a sudden spike in difficulty and you're underlevel.

I just got done with Hau2.0's battle after the first Gym and my levels are the same as his. The thing is, I've been rotating the first slot a lot, if a pokemon falls short on levels I put it there a bit and catches up quickly. So far, seems like they did balance it well.

That isn’t the point I don’t think. They’re doing it on purpose to maintain some semblance of difficulty. I dunno if you’ve seen it but a lot of people have been complaining that because of the auto-exp share, you end up overleveled without even trying.

It seems to happen after the 3rd gym. There's a level jump and the levels seem to start actually rising rather quickly and nicely, as well as EXP slowing slightly if you aren't shoving EXP candies down your pokemon throats.

There is only a 28 level difference between the first and last gym.
Compared to Red/Blue's 36 levels, Yellow's 43, G/S/C's 31, Emerald's 31, DPPt's 35/36, BW's 29, B2W2's 38(Normal)/35(Easy)/41(Hard), XY's 47, and Sun/Moon Hala vs Hapu is still 33 level difference.

Best guess is it avoids clipping errors. You never notice how most RPGs have your weapon/shield floating a couple inches off your back? It's because chest armor is different sizes. Locking in your outfit when they know certain animations are going to happen is a way to avoid that.

No, it means being in a level range where the game is actually starting to become noticeably more difficult because of your levels. Being a couple of levels above or below the opponent doesn't necessarily equate to being overlevelled or underlevelled (although in Pokémon's case the former is almost always true anyway).

I remember when I was 8 playing Yellow I was a dumbass and ran out of money so i had to do the E4 without items. That was the only time I actually struggled in pokemon, and it was because of my own fuckup. Pokemon games arent meant to be hard.

BW makes sense because that game (and B/W2) have a special exp scaling where its really hard to out-level the next gym leader, 90% of the time you will be lower level than them.
