This, HGSS in particular is great.
I'd also suggest FRLG if you like Kanto, it's objectively the best way to experience the region.

>upgraded elite 4 after you beat Kanto

>Larvitar/Misdreavus/Murkrow are catchable way earlier thanks to the Johto Safari Zone
I love Crystal but HGSS builds on it in so many ways, it's simply the best.
