So the "softlocks" were actually because the streamer was using cheats.
I don't even plan on buying the game but the amount of lies around it is absolutely ridicolous.

A value that literally only determines the number of an item you have. Nothing else. If changing that softlocks the game, then getting that many items the legit way would also cause the problem, and that's just more proof of how shittily this game was thrown together.

The original data is say 00001 00005 and you change it to 00080 00999

That doesn't break anything ever. Even 16 bit variables don't have a limit anywhere near 999, the limit is 65536

I have hacked games in runtime. Changing an item's stack value on the fly doesn't fuck up a completely unrelated gameplay loop unless you're running Assembler on a system where memory efficiency is paramount.

The more I think about it, even in the case of hacking the battle loop, I think Coalossal's GMax move is still possible to softlock. That Quagsire burn ticked twice, but the ongoing damage of the GMax move only triggered once. There's another phase at the end of turn, after weather/terrain resets.
