Fuck, I'm no Gen 1 dick sucker, but one thing they should ALWAYS look back to Gen 1 for is to see how they started evolved into looking more badass. They looked like true monstrous animals that you wouldn't wanna fuck with. This dude just looks like if you pissed him off, he'll just kick you in the knee and hop away. Whereas if you pissed off Blastoise, he'd stare you down before blasting you with his giant hydro guns.
