They have the same triangles, not vertices. The number of vertices can vary because you can optimize the triangles to share vertices.
The triangles make up the mesh / wiring, but that's not the model. Although it is the most important part of the model.
The model also includes the UV map and the texture. The UV map is a function that allows the texture to cloak the mesh.
GF reused the meshes, reused UV maps and barely tweaked the textures.
