People hated gen 5 starters when it first came out, but looking at this makes it look pretty ridiculous. The gen after is fucking horrendous. Sun and Moon is mostly okay, but none of the current ones look good.

XY was the only region where there was a theme: the starters were based off JRPG classes, so their typings and stats were balanced around that idea.

Every other gen, the starters have no relation to one another except the fire-water-grass type advantage. They're themrned after completely unrelated ideas.

What's the theme of Gen V? Samurott and Emboar have warrior themes, but Serperior doesn't.
Emboar is also a Fire/Fighting while Serperior and Samurott are monotypes. Emboar, Samurott are mixed attackers while Serperior is fast and specially bulky.

There's no rhyme or reason to any of their concept.

Ok you’re right I don’t think royalty was the right word i was looking for. They are more inspired by military officers of their respected country. For example. Only fire starters still work with zodiac theory. Water starters might be based on semiaquatic animals, but Inteleon broke this rule. Grass starters don't have a pattern, I still think the extinct animal theory is bullshit.
Starter trio in each generation more or less have a theme related to their region.
After Gen 3, starters have more human features. But these features become worse after Gen 5, where they don't feel like wild animals at all.

Wasn't the gen 6 starter set the only one that was explicitly stated to follow that theme? I'm always open to see sauce on those claims, though. Not a huge themefag myself, but if I had to guess what the theme was for the gen 7 set, it wouldn't be RPG classes—it'd be entertainers/performers.

I think the Chinese zodiac for fire starters is true, but it probably got established somewhere between Gens 3 and 4 with Charizard and Blaziken being a coincidence and Typlosion something to ignore. But at this point it feels very deliberate.
