I realized during gen 7 that SM and USUM has a lot of cool stuff and get more hate than they deserve, but the games have zero replay value due to the sheer amount of cutscenes.

The non stop dialog was too much, couldn't get past the 3rd gym before putting it down. It was the worst thing about SM and they decided to double it.

I'd argue Gen 5 kinda had cutscene hell, but they never went on for too long. Then XY and ORAS upped the ante before finally descending a couple circles for Gen 7. I say this as someone who likes Gen 5

The only reason to like XYORAS is because between them you can catch all non-mythical monsters and breeding/training them is easier than any game before them. If you were around for the giveaways you can have a 100% complete living dex with all mythicals in those games as well. Other than that one feature, DPP were the last Pokemon games and HGSS was a proper final sendoff to the franchise.
