I haven't heard so many excuses for a long time now. If you truly believe that, why would you even play those games if they "were always so bad"? Are you held hostage? I don't understand this fanbase.

Because Game Freak has always maintained mastery of balancing all of the horse shit with juuust enough enjoyable new shit/occasional returning favorite mechanics to justify continuing on the ride. A lot of people got the vibe that GF was misguided but meant well.

This is the first time that GF has fucked up so badly, and so clearly demonstrated they don't give a shit about those of us who played from the start, that it finally opened the floodgates on every single complaint we've had over the years.

It's been a sobering experience that's made us all step back and realize "Hey wait, this is the single biggest media franchise of all time. Why have we been treating them like an indie dev?"

Which is sad, because they really did achieve something else: Exploration. Every region had its secrets, and apparently Galar doesn't.
That's why Pokemon GO will always fail. Reality never lives up to the sense of wonder you get in the Pokemon World, sappy though it sounds.

By 12th gen, Pokemon is just going to have wild mons on a conveyor belt, where you catch them one after the other just by throwing a pokeball. That way you only have to use one button.

Linear can be good if something else is engaging to balance it out. Most of the time this comes with challenge and testing reflexes or strategy. Metroid Fusion was the opposite of Super by being more restrictive and linear, but enemies hit like a truck and boss battles were fun.

I've only played through the first gym, but I can see why people say the new Pokémon games are too easy and handholdy, despite thinking those aspects were overstated in XY and SM. XY and SM were easy since they gave you a lot of options to deal with problems (eg. items, moves, experience, pokemon availability), but so far I feel like SS overdo it and I have to come up with self imposed restrictions that would otherwise be impossible in previous generations.

linear is good when there's actual content and level design and not just a bunch of on-rails hallways like the recent pokemon games.
non-linear can be good if it's done in a way that isn't disruptive to level design and content - for instance, metroidvanias, the saga series, non-linear levels in doom, etc.
open world sandboxes are NEVER good because they always sacrifice level design and content for aesthetics.

Older Pokémon games were linear in the sense that badges had a recommended order, though not all were beholden to it.

In Gen I, Brock has to be first, Misty has to be second, and Giovanni has to be last. There are some other conditions, like Erika has to be after Misty, Blaine has to be after Koga, and Lt. Surge has to be after Misty OR Koga, but nothing's really stopping you from doing Sabrina as your third Gym. Certain locales have three or more exits as well, which allow you to take a different path than wherever leads to the next story beat.

Gen II had Falkner, Bugsy, Whitney, Morty, and Clair in set order. Chuck, Jasmine, and Pryce were somewhat open. Morty could be ignored for a while since you didn't need Surf until the Lake of Rage or trying to get to Cianwood City. The Kanto Gym Leaders can be fought in any order, and while there is a bit of a structure to Kanto, it is somewhat open.

Gen III I can't remember as well, but if I remember correctly, Brawly could be skipped until Norman and Winona could be ignored until you did the League. There are a few side areas you can take after Norman to reach Fortree City, and there are also side routes that you can ignore or backtrack to that loop back to earlier locations.

Gen IV, at least DP, Maylene and Wake could be done either order. You could take different routes from Hearthome City, but the south one was blocked in Platinum which was the first indication to me that the games were becoming more linear. HGSS was more linear than GSC as well, and Green could only be fought after defeating the other Kanto Gym Leaders.

In BW, I believe that everything was in a set order and the region itself was a line. Really disappointing to look at visually compared to Hoenn and Sinnoh. Some of the routes were still good though, even though there weren't many. Also a shame that after the first breather town, it's Gym after Gym after Gym until the end of the story.
