There’s no “story” in the sense that it’s some grandiose tale being told, it feels more like you are playing through a shonen anime story where most of the “plot” is character moments for each member of the cast and the climax is some cliche everyone gathers to fight the big bad. But what makes it cool is that Pokémon has never had a story like that before so it’s both unique and interesting. It’s not all in your face about it where it comes off as pretentious like in ORAS and BW, and it doesn’t side line you like you aren’t the main character like in SM and USUM.
It’s more like X&Y than anything but the villain showdown at the end doesn’t feel completely random like it did in Kalos
