If the prey species itself is a proficient grappler, or has developed counter-strategies to grappling, such as spines or horns, or a disjointed weapon, then engaging in that form of combat is highly undesirable for the predator.
A much better strategy is to quickly overwhelm such prey before it can mount its own defense, deal lethal damage, and then retreat to avoid retaliation while the victims dies from its injuries. Not only is this a good strategy, but it is a strategy employed by many predatory species that lack grappling or longer ranged attack options.
Food for though, advanced perception and tracking abilities would be very useful for remaining on the trail of such dying animals without provoking retaliation from it, or its comrades.
