The Mystery Dungeon games are actually pretty bad though. Like I love 'em but it's like someone did an experiment to see if they could run a game on pure soul without any actual good gameplay.

No it makes sense. These journalists and reviewers rate anything low the moment they find it remotely challenging.
>X/Y/Sun/Moon a walk in a park = highest rating
>Platinum/B2 easy but still harder than the newer games
