But that's what they've been doing since the VI generation. Less designs, more focus on original concepts, and new forms for old Pokemon.

It would still be a waste to not put all eggs in the better basket.
Instead of making new Pokémon they should make tons of sidequests and events that showcase the personality of and interaction with existing Pokémon. Lots of them should be memorable for being involved in something like Marowak in the Pokémon Tower and Espurr with Emma in the Looker Quest.

For real though, i don't think we need a proper gen 9. What the next main pokemon game should be is all the regions with all the pokemon. A Pokemon equivalent to SSBU.

I think the only way we end up with this is if Nintendo intervenes, though. Gamefreak on their own would never do anything like this.
