Dropped pokemon after Gen 4. Came back to it for Sun/Moon and those were kinda meh.

Planning on getting Shield, but it also looks like shit. I've heard 5 Gen are the best, should I purchase a DS and play those instead?

Just a heads up that Black and White only have Gen 5 Pokémon until post game. The fanbase is very split on those games for that reason.

I think it should also be said that at the time B/W were released, they we're NOT well regarded by the community and have only been praised in retrospect.

I'd be interested to know what someone playing the games for the first time now thinks of them.

The plot is a direct continuation unlike the usual 3rd versions so BW and BW2 are both worth playing

If you didn't like IV you wont't like V, if you liked it though and dropped the franchise for other reasons check it out.
I personally think the games peak with gen III, but V is definitely the last decent one so I'd recommend it.

You can play DS games on the 3DS, so no need to buy a DS (unless you pirated S/M, and if you did just pirate the rest)
