You don't have to abandon an older game because a newer one came out.
I'm probably sticking with USUM overall just because of how much of a shitshow Gen 8 turned out to be. I'd rather be able to play with my UBs I trained up than stick them in Pokemon jail until they get remembered and stuck in another game.

It's not that bad, people were just disappointed by the first fully 3D outing mainline Pokemon got. Personally I liked some of the region, mostly the urban centres though. Some of the routes, namely the snow route with the Mamoswine and the ground route with the Rhyhorn, were among the things I didn't like. Also had a bit harder time getting into the games because I'm a bugfag (only one new line and it's a lepidopteran again) and megas didn't do much for me, so I wasn't able to really use a fully new team of designs I liked, like I usually do.

It's actually my favorite Gen. I know I'll be called a fag for it and what not, but I don't give a fuck. I loved the music, the mons, the characters, the story, and the region as a whole. Best starters for sure.

And yeah, I've been playing since Red and Blue, I'm old and it sucks. But goddammit did I love that Gen.

I will say though, USUM was quite the fucking rip off. I genuinely thought we were getting more from it. But it was a literal 40$ DLC.

You could clearly tell that it was barely an edit of SM.
Still a better game overall though, no real reason to even bother with SM now because the only good point it has over USUM is the story and you can just watch that shit because you can just watch that.
