I couldn't accept that nostalgia was the only reason I preferred the aural and visual aesthetics of older games.
The vast majority of my childhood was spent playing newer games, which was a small knock against the nostalgia theory. More importantly, I found that I wasn't nostalgic for most old things, like movies or books.
Something was different about games, and I eventually realized that the limitations of the early gaming medium streamlined and hyper-focused everyone's talents in a way that produced some beautiful, deliberate, soulful art.
