This is the second time in one year this has happened with Nintendo games. Near the start of 2019 Smash Bros released a DLC character that would wipe SD card if you played Classic mode with it.

Don't kid yourself, the whole incident doesn't have any negative impact in the series after all because it will still sell like hotcakes. Sales is all that matters at the end of the day for gamefreak. I actually fucking hope that it will affect the series' reputation but knowing pokemon fans, they'll just forget about it soon and proceed to consume the next product

Your internal storage and the SD card are both NAND partitions, the SD card is a mounted drive when you insert it.

I don't know anything about the switch, but on ANDROID, the /data partition on the internal storage does have data necessary for a clean boot. But it's a simple matter of wiping that partition and doing a clean ROM install if it bricks.

It sounds like Nintendo prevents you from accessing recovery or flashing signed firmware images, so your switch gets bootlooped when Sword/Shield crash.
