It's not even about the dex. I could forgive the cut if the game made actual improvements in the formula. Instead, we get hallways. Even RBY didn't just have hallways. Don't you remember going into Seafoam Islands, wondering what'd be there with its different entrances? Or all those Victory Roads you traveled through? Or hunting for the Regis? It’s obvious based on the talking points reviews use whether they’ve played it or not (particularly if they say ALL of the animations are shit, if you play it you notice the excellent detail of a lot of the animations, at least some of which are worth mentioning) plus the fact that it’s only been out for a few hours. Yes pirates played it beforehand, but I guarantee those reviews aren’t from pirates.

The word “review-bomb” implies dropping an extremely low score on the game for reasons that don’t pertain to the game’s quality itself. Thousands of people giving the games a 2 BECAUSE OF PROBLEMS WITH THE GAME ITSELF is not review bombing, even if it’s overly critical. Being harsh or having high standards is not review bombing.

Review bombing would be, say, people giving SwSh a bunch of 1s because Masuda made an unpopular comment about Chinese people on Twitter. By definition review-bombs are large amounts of “off topic” reviews.

Exactly. And in IGN's case we know they were due to the reviewers stance on upset fans and citing things every Pokemon game is known for. The better reviews I saw were Eurogamer, Gamexplain, and NintendoLife. They rated it average or good, but were well aware that they weren't perfect either.
Will be interesting to see if the critic score goes up or down.

Give it a day to a week. There's going to be a lot more professional reviews since the games are actually out now. Hopefully the rest aren't braindead like IGN and give it a 9.3 despite them acknowledging and pointing out the major flaws it has.

At this point I'm 100% positive that IGN will write a real review but the number is what the publisher paid for.

If Game Freak care about reviews at all then I think high 70s would be enough for them to think that maybe their games are declining in quality. I can't think of any mainline game with a score that low. That's just me being hopelessly optimistic though.

Anon do you know that some of the worst games in history sold well. No one's expecting the games not to sell well, we're expecting people to knowledge the problems the games have and asking for GF to do better so they won't make the same mistakes they did with SWSH.

If I had to be optimistic, I don't think the reviews scores here in the states mean anything to GF, it's the reviews in PKMN's home country. The Japs recently got officially informed about the dex cut and they're SUPER pissed. Not to mention the digital swsh deleting your save data thing is currently trending 1# there and it's just fueling more fire. The fact that they cancelled that Tokyo launch event shows how much the Jap reviewers have an influence on them. At least that's what I believe, cause' the Japs being the biggest audience of Pokemon iirc.

Mabey they feel Japanese fans will be more receptive to negative publicity but I'm pretty sure they sell more copys in the US than Japan

I would say Pokemon is first of all a franchise focused on a kid audience. However just because something is meant for kids, doesn't mean the quality shouldn't be good. Sure kids might not pay attention to certain details as adults do. However as someone with teaching experience, don't underestimate their sense of judgement
