This is not a drill. Some jap's Swich bricked on stream when his game crashed and he tried to restart it. He was playing off a physical copy.

Actual issue is that a NAND access is timing out when the game downloads content in the background (wild area distribution raids, wondercards, etc).

My best guess is that the game's auto-saving + downloading content in the background leads to fairly unique access patterns to NAND, which are triggering some kind of concurrency issue/race condition in the Switch's sdmmc driver. I think it's an OS bug. What the game's doing *should* be safe/okay, but the OS's fucking up and causing problems.

When the error occurs, the sdmmc driver tries to recover -- when it does this, some SD card accesses fucked, and the SD card corrupts if its exFAT. Nothing goes wrong if it's FAT32, or there's no SD card.

I've explained why Pokemon would be triggering crashes a bunch of times, see >>41205781.

The crashes are OS crashes though, and the game's doing legitimate accesses so far as I can tell (accessing BCAT + saving at the same time should be totally fine). It's a Switch OS problem that the game is unfortunate enough to trigger due to pretty unique behavior.

I think it should be a lot less likely, since there won't be concurrent attempts to access stuff in NAND. That probably fixes access pattern issues.

However, you can also just format your SD card as FAT32. If you do that, then if a crash occurs nothing will be corrupted and you can just re-open the game with nothing lost.

If it's a game access problem, then Gamefreak should change up their access patterns to mitigate via a software patch.

But they can't actually *fix* that problem, since it's an OS error, and would require a firmware update to actually solve.

If Nintendo approved it/said what their code did was safe (and all games have to be approved for read/write stuff as part of lotchecking), then it's hardly the game's fault that the OS doesn't work how it should.

Over 200GB yeah, I haven't had a issue yet but I personally don't want to risk having to redownload everything, so if you only have few games and are okay with that than that's fine, at worst you'd be dealing with a small headache, but personally I'm regretting digital and wished I picked physical copy of it instead.

Orange screen is a panic due to hardware failure if I'm not mistaken.

In general the mSD card issue hasn't been limited to Pokémon. Obviously yes, now there appears to be a larger issue but the issue we had been seeing wasn't anything new to the Switch so there was no reason to believe it wasn't just the system.

Just because we didn't jump on your bandwagon without proof doesn't mean we're shills. I would absolutely prefer if I could talk everyone out of buying it but if I know something that conflicts with something bad being said about it I'm not going to lie and pretend I don't.

Crashing is nothing more than the game closing unexpectedly, bricking is when the firmware has a problem and the console can't properly boot or run anything, turning it into a $300 brick(the guy in OP post basically has a console that only shows an orange screen when he tries to turn it on or off).

It's very possible that switch crashes happen all the time, because of faulty shit. But because Sw/Sh just came out, it gets attributed to that. Seriously, this happens in the news all the time.

As far as we know, there's one or two bricked systems, so it's not really clear if Sw/Sh is at fault.

In the case that the issue isn't addressed until then, what can you do in case you do get a orange screen? Can you shut the Switch by holding power for 15 seconds and from there, in case it goes back to normal, just avoid playing the game until it gets fixed or downright just not play it at all?
