Ideally, gamefreak realizes their mistakes and hires competent developers to help. Get monolith soft or someone on board to handle the actual programming and world design. Maybe even Nintendo would step in.
Realistically they'll continue down this path and nothing will change until masuda and ohmori are gone, and even then it's doubtful.

man, I LOVE hoenn like you can't imagine. I even bought ORAS despite knowing of the battle frontier because I wanted to play hoenn again, but RS WAS shitty and felt as unfinished as all the other first pair of games on new hardware after them.

Think about it this way, not only did Gamefreak remove Pokemon from a Pokemon game and tell us straight up we have to pay to keep our Pokemon alive, they also lied about the game's endgame content as well as reusing assets. They lied and lied and lied and lied and the game itself is completely barren with an empty field and zero postgame to speak off.

And people still defended them and bought the game in droves.
GF is untouchable, they can release a 2 hour demo at $60 and people will both buy it and die on a hill defending it. There's no hope, LGPE and SWSH show just how much GF can get away with. Pokemon is objectively over.

No, actually. I explored absolutely every single one of them and outside the regis and plot stuff everything else is just random pokemon encounters with a fairly limited diversity and finding some items. More stuff like the unlocking of the regis would have been appreciated .

A more open world would lend itself well to Pokemon. In BW2, gym leaders were confirmed to have multiple teams that they use based on how many badges you have. So being able to face them in any order could make subsequent playthroughs more interesting. It doesn't even need to have a fuck-huge world like BotW or Skyrim, simply being able to choose which town you visit next would go a long way in making the game feel like an adventure. Level scaling could easily be handled based on your Pokemon level or the number of gym badges you have, or they could simply have areas containing very strong Pokemon and trainers where you're forced to retreat until you're strong enough to take them on.

The only item that will still exist will be poke balls. The item button in battles will be replaced by a "throw poke ball" button.
