Games have been going down hill since Generation 6. But at least Kalos had a wealth of good Pokemon designs, and you could understand that it was Nintendo's first foray into doing something like this on a handheld console. But this is where the first symptoms of modern Pokemon started to appear with the constant interruptions that would only grow worse later, the free starters and the lack of depth.
Generation 7 took all of these things and upscaled them. Sure, you don't get a free starter in S/M anymore, but the games are still excessively generous and very easy. I didn't play LGPE but the fact that it was a Kanto remake was enough to turn me off, and I'm sure there was a lot wrong with those titles too.
