>>41218721There was a much lower fall from G/S/C -> R/S/E.
but yeah people still weren't happy
like, I accepted no day/night because holy fuck the original GBA screen is dark, playing Gold on that thing was nearly impossible
was a bit miffed at not having something as cool as being able to traverse the old region in R/S
at least Emerald had the Battle Frontier, which was really cool, but R/S were a bit shafted there
everyone I knew was fucking PISSED that you couldn't bring over old Pokemon and I don't think people actually stopped getting mad for the entire year until FR/LG finally came out
mechanically, R/S/E were major improvements, loads of under the hood changes
graphically, R/S/E looked reasonable for the hardware, shit like seeing the clouds and you reflected in the water felt pretty "next gen"
as a game, it felt like an overall upgrade, which is in stark contrast to the 6->7->8 line feeling like a sequence of downgrades
>>41218894Yeah. You'd have needed some active smart circuitry in a specific cable for the game
basically, you'd have "upgrade device" that had a GBC port on one side, a GBA port on the other, and it pretended to the GBC game that it was trading (something's gotta come back too, right?) while passing the data to the GBA
on the GBA side, it'd convert the incoming GB format Pokemon data into something resembling the original pokemon but not exactly due to the major format changes
it's all a bit of a mess
