Seriously, it's not like old-style rivals were just total cunts. Blue was sensible. He had his moments where he was clearly throwing the player a bone, but he was still boasting and prideful and was positioned as an actual challenge on your way to the top. Your rival doesn't need to be as much of a jerk as he was, but having any personality beyond being a dull tag-along like Hop, the retards from X/Y (seriously, all three of them were mentally handicapped in some way), or Hau (actually, he still had some remote degree of personality) is important.
I liked that Hop was supposed to be a proper contender and was rising up next to you, but what I didn't like was how he's never really portrayed as being in a position of strength to you. You're just beating up on your friend who sucks compared to you, while he tries to keep a happy face.

I wouldn't have minded how edgy he was if he weren't just lame -- like, when it comes to edgy rivals, Silver at least seemed competent despite being all like, "I hate the weak" all the time despite you also just kicking his shit in.
