Aggressively mediocre.
It functions as a game in the most bare minimum sense in a non-overly offensive way. There are moments where it's fun, but these crests are basically islands in the sea, and getting to them isn't quite fun.
It's not quite as obnoxious to try and go anywhere as gen 7 was with the constant interruptions of some asshat's life story, but that's a low bar, and this is still pretty frustrating
If you can find some charm in the characters, and have a good imagination, then you can probably make it through the empty bits just fine, though at that point I'd say there are games that better respect your ability to imagine than this.
If you ever become unsatisfied with the game, however, it truly falls apart, because there IS no greater thing to pull you back into it. The Wild Area is indeed the closest thing to a true height the game reaches, and that is a spot of fun that can probably last a good 3-4 hours. But like all such highlights, you quickly reach the end of it, and in a way, it makes the rest of the game stand out more for it's mediocrity, and pretty definitively marks the end of the "honeymoon period" with this game. You'll never have more fun than that first hour or two in the wild area, and you'll never be able to have that first hour or so again
Making Curry is kind of amusing, and is essentially the only "fun" thing you can go do to break up the monotony. Your mileage may vary on that, though. I do have a curry fetish.
I believe Dynamax is a sufficiently intricate mechanic to make competitive interesting, but for the single player experience, it's arguably more thoughtless and pointless than Megas and Z moves
It will only make you angry in the sense that say, Kirby Star Allies might have if you played it at release. You'll likely come away from the game with more of a "that's it?" than a "It's finished". You won't feel robbed, just disappointed.
