LGPE sold 11 million, I would bet SWSH sells 12-15 which caused Nintendo to take a look at the franchise a little more critically

Do we actually have a comparison to how many 3dss, gbas and switches had been sold by the time the games came out? I'm fairly certain the Switch currently has a bigger userbase than the GBA and 3DS did when RS and XY came out though, but I might be wrong, we could also compare how it fares against other games, for example, I'm pretty sure every mainline Pokemon title except maybe USUM outsold every Zelda game on the 3DS, but LGPE didn't outsell BotW, granted, BotW had a massive head start, but so did OoT3D, so I dunno.

This is my bet too. I do expect extremely high early sales, probably on par or even better than usual, but I also expect a fairly quick drop off that leads to the games ultimately having below average sales.

You have to remember a lot of the Switch's sales come from the digital voucher system now. We don't get that data openly so there's probably quite a number of digital preorders. This happened previously with Fire Emblem predicted sales where the voucher sales significantly boosted it's numbers later.

Ultimately though these games don't need low sales to change things because they have a public relations problem and the game is killing Switch units.

The actual money made is only part of a game's success. Even if the money made is better than usual just losing a million customers would be a huge fucking deal, let alone two million or more. If it even went as low as 14m I imagine that would cause legitimate panic at the company.
