Even most of the upcoming Ashime will have hardly anything to do with Gen 8. Most of it is just going to be revisiting previous regions.

It really feels like they put Gen 8 out and want to brush it under the rug immediately after words, did they know how bad it would be or something?

Yeah, but internally TPC probably aren't especially happy that they don't have nearly enough new material to milk out for an entire dedicated wave of merchandising (or even have it be the majority focus) this time. Either they're going to put GF on thin ice for Gen 9 or they're gonna put them on thin ice and demand a fleshed out sequel/third game for SwSh that can actually be exploited for merch.
