I never understood this stupid retcon. Mega Evolving is activated through a stone link and sheer friendship and willpower. If it really was hurting Pokemon, wouldn't they be shown to be more reluctant towards the process? Why isn't there a single NPC that questions the ethnicity and morality of Mega Evolution? Why do all the important trainers, whether blatantly good or evil, use it? I have a feeling it was either shit translation or the writers thinking "That'd be a great twist!" and never thinking about it ever again.

Well yeah I'm aware of the dex entries for megas themselves, I assumed there was NPC dialogue or a director interview that outright claimed it for being the reason they were axed as a mechanic. Oh well.

It was probably one of the Pokemon that Gigantamaxed back then, and the ancient people chose to draw it to record the event. They could've drawn any Pokemon, but just chose this one. I bet it isn't any more significant than that.
Out-of-universe, though, maybe it was intended to play a bigger role in an earlier version of the story.
