The song has three major varients in it that together sound off. But in the game the really peppy part only happens when you knock out one of their pokemon, and after they send out a new one it slowly shifts back, while when they knock out one of yours its really subdued, and the chanting only happens when they send out their last pokemon.

Does this actually explain why the tracks themselves are so fucking shocking and abysmal? It's essentially the audio version of "It looks better in motion"? The music to me is one of the most important things in Pokemon, and seeing this video made the gym leader theme go from one of the weakest to the best in the series for me.
