>>41267543 etc. They just got the bad luck of being isolated, not having beasts of burden, etc which put them at a disadntage in terms of development speed, long distance trade and logistics, and made them vulnerable to european pathogens.
Compare to Japan, where by the time Japan transitoned from villages to cities, Mexico had already had cities with tens of thousands of people for almost a millennia; Japan on the flip side just got to develop much faster due to contact with china, and was able to modernize since by the time they start to interact with world powers, the world had already moved out of their colionalist mindset.
Had history gone differently you could see Japan have turned into a colionized corrupt shithole, and mexico or peru as cultutral powerhouses with tons of surviving castles, palaces, mythology and history in games and film, etc instead.
