What's happening is that the game makes heavy use of the NAND (which has known issues) and causing systems to go haywire. So far it seems to be random, but we're only on release day 2 so how it's triggered and how far it reaches remains to be seen. Safest would be to hold off on playing it until a patch, otherwise make a backup of any game that needs it.

also, no, it seems to erase data on microSD cards permanently. it doesn't touch the data on the console's internal memory, so your saves are fine. but your downloaded games/other SD card data get screwed

There is nothing really conflicting about it. Just watch all those streams where people get bricked and you'll see that most (but not all) of them have physical copies. You can tell on the home screen going by the icon in the top left corner.

The current best outlook is that it only happens while connected online and in the Wild Area. The way the game checks and saves online data in the Wild Area eats up internal memory far more than any other game on the system, it uses logic gates that no other games on Switch use (maybe once in a blue moon for some function but not often) so much that just a few days of play will fuck it up completely and render the console unusable. How Gamefreak let this happen I have no clue. If you HAVE been playing online, then stop immediately and also turn off autosave. For the time being you can’t undo the damage, but you can slow it down by not connecting online in the Wild Area. If you do connect online for mystery gift or something like that, turn it back off as soon as you’re done just to be safe.

No idea, but the majority of reports are coming from physical copies. And the range of Switches it happens on seems to have no clear indication if there are safe Switches.
Funnily enough pirates have had no issues. Whether it's god smiting the consoomers or that the older Switch models are safe from the issue is currently unknown.

I have a physical copy and you should be safe, in the last brickening thread, an anon that also mentioned having a physical copy said they went into the wild area with online on and said they were getting a lot of slowdown as if the switch was doing a lot of read/write cycles, I went into the wild area with auto save off and my switch disconnected from the internet and got no slowdown whatsoever, I had more slowdown from Leon’s hug box in the beginning of the game

Avoid online as much as possible, that is where the real issues with NAND writing comes in (plus online Wild Area is glitchy and slow anyway so that's a big red flag).

Disable autosave too. Do these two things and you should be fine in theory. The Switches NAND has always had failure issues, happened with BoTW and Smash too (it's just happening way more often with Pokemon cause of how the game writes to NAND with Autosave and Online)

Playing offline and with auto-saves off, probably works to avoid all the problems.
But the fact that I can't be entirely certain of this, and the fact that the online features are ultimately part of the game and the potential fun, so playing the game without them is kind of an inferior experience.

Not really. They're still the downplayed version which is that it only affects exFAT cards when playing digital. While exFAT is probably more vulnerable, there are a lot of people who have had FAT32 cards corrupted, and there's a lot of issues even with the physical version.

Holy shit, I think that’s EXACTLY what’s happening with the wild area online, remember how DK64 needed the Expansion Pak just to be stable? I think online makes the Wild Area so memory intensive that some dumbfuck decided to use the NAND as virtual memory to keep the game from crashing when online instead of fixing the underlying problem, just what kind of retards did this fucking company hire to do the netcode? I fully expect wild area online features to be disabled before the end of the week to minimize damage

I'll be honest. I've been playing Sword for a few days now, but today my left joycon started to seemingly experience joycon drift. I've heard this was common in switches, so I switched to my other left joycon, and the same thing happened. This has never happened before, and since it started on both controllers in such a short amount of time, I doubt it's a coincidence. Something is really wrong with pokemon sword and shield. The drift has been going on and off since then. It doesn't completely cripple my gameplay, and seems to only trigger during pokemon battles. When I use the joycon by disconnecting it from the switch, it functions normally without drifting.

Not related to the system-breaking bugs, but apparently the game's shops and move relearner are bugged? Sometimes when you try to buy stuff the A and B buttons stop working and you have to reset the game, and if a Pokemon has more than 67 relearnable moves then the game will crash when you attempt to relearn one.

I pirated Sword and was playing on lan-play and it barely worked, then I started getting crashes and freezes after I installed Shield, uninstalled Shield, Sword was working again after I set all my internet back to default but would crash in airplane mode now so I disabled Ldn_mtm background service and things seem a lot more stable. Have I done cumulative damage to the NAND? Should I restore a nand backup at some point, or wait for NIntendo system update to fix everything?

I mean, BoTW wasn't bad but it still could've had a lot more stuff in it and I suspect that being open world is why there wasn't much in the way of dungeons. Plus, it's just a big resource sink that diverts attention from more important features (e.g. more than 10 routes, an actual postgame, etc. )

Didn't the 3DS games shut off the system OS in order to get more memory or something? Is it possible that some vestige from that process is left from the 3DS games and that's causing an issue? It would at least explain why the games are putting so much more of a strain on the system hardware than literally every other switch game, since it's trying to use other parts of the hardware as basically additional RAM like the 3DS games did. I'm a complete brainlet so I may be completely off base, but the idea makes sense to me.

Now the orange screen bricks here im betting are caused by faulty switch consoles being heated up by swsh and the solder balls under the cpu cracking. In other words its the x360 rrod all over again.

Something that has me puzzled is that it seems like an unproportional amount of people who seem to be reporting this issue seem to be Japanese.
Is there any particular reason as to why so many more Japanese players would have this issue compared to westerners? There's no System Region Lock on the Switch like past Nintendo consoles to make it different from Western Switches, so what could it be?
