Even if I do all that, I'll still feel that I'm putting my switch at risk. It's out of warranty so if it gets fucked I have to buy a new one and I really don't want to spend $300 because I couldn't wait to play a kid'd game. Also some of my shit doesn't allow for save data backups and I am not risking losing that stuff.

This guy recovered his Switch from the orange screen. He checked make sure his other game's data was safe, found that Pokemon Sword wouldn't even run, and so he deleted both Pokemon's game data and save data to be safe. He says his current system now has busted Wi-Fi and some games don't work properly so he's going to transfer to a new system. The busted Wi-Fi might be evidence towards the theory that a big issue is the game's online coding putting a shitload of stress on the system.

But in this case he was able to salvage it from being bricked, which is a sign that whatever's going on could theoretically be reversed depending on what it actually does.

Right now we have no way of knowing for sure if the bricking is due directly to the game itself or some other factor that requires the presence of the game to take effect. If it's the latter, finding out what that factor is and dealing with it should make it safe to play without bricking at least.
