On island 3 the routes get larger and i think they only bother you in the cities. Unfortunately Lillie comes back to walk you through all of island 4 and the climax.

Rowlet makes a good false swipe user later on, but all of the starters are outclassed by most route mons in SuMo which I thought was a good thing.

Yep, the whole game is like that.
But at least you can use any of the 800+ mons you want once trading is unlocked.
And Hau at least gives you -some- breathing room, unlike Hop.
Lillie' still a shitbiscuit, though.
