Just have each pokemon have a super effective move against pokemon of their weakness. Rock bro gets a grass move or something so they can fuck over some cocky sweeper.

Hard to design gym leaders without a theme. Infact they would need to rework the entire pokemon champion system if type based gyms got scrapped.

Or give them pokemon that balance out common weaknesses. Nessa leads with Goldeen, which has lightning rod as it's HA. Which is why it killed me that they didn't use that as it's ability.

The game wants you to plan for the gym and how types work cause that's an important mechanic, but its too easy to learn and leaves little challenge for returning players.

- Volkner and Flint from DP don't have a monotype team, but their types are represented through their roster's moves
- A theoretical "water" gym leader has a rain team with balanced typing
- Imagine Petalburg's gym trainers, but as a gym leader with a well rounded team

That way even with EXP share being permanently on you'll still fight a gym leader that has the same level as you or has 3-5 levels higher no matter what

If their Pokemon needs to evolve to a 2nd/3rd stage then so be it

Give them coverage moves that cuck certain types that are supereffective against their Pokemon

You are part of the problem. We've had many generations of monotype gyms and the games were fine. Monotype gyms are a staple of Pokemon and it can be made harder through real fucking movesets and a less retarded AI - meaning better switches, and dual type Pokemon at the very least.

Like a big titted gym leader could only likes using round pokemon could make Gym leaders team so much more easier. Like with a round gym leader you could have:
>Electrode
>Glalie
>Forretress
>Poliwrath
All in one team. There could be more examples for gym leaders too like gym leaders that use cute, ugly, colorful, scary, smart looking pokemon. The pokemon they could use could be challenging as well

Maybe have them be specialists, but that only being reflected by their ace, while the rest of their Pokemon are thematically fitting but not really that type. For example, maybe a Fighting type gym where the ace is Conkeldurr or something, but the other Pokemon are Tsareena, Braviary, etc.

rock gyms will cuck fire types but fire types are always given double kick or metal claw. give rock types bounce because some of them do bounce and it allows them to cuck grass types, no way on earth they'll learn electric or grass moves to cuck water types

water gyms should have ice moves since water shitters can learn ice moves, there's nothing much they can do to water types

grass gyms can't do shit against fire types since they can't learn rock and ground moves, they can't do shit against grass types either unless they can learn bug or poison moves

fire gyms should have pokemon that can learn wild charge, thunder punch or thunder fang and there are a few fire types that do learn rock and ground moves
