FRLG are top tier games and should be included on the list of greats with HGSS, Emerald, Platinum, and the Unova sequels.

Yeah honestly I have better memories of FRLG than I do of RS, the postgame was the best in the series at the time of release and I was so happy to find old johto monsters.

Never got the love for day night cycles tbqh. I only really get to play at night, sucks to have half the games Pokemon locked behind a neetwall that I never get to see without the hassle of constantly changing the game time.

They are great remakes but the pokemon distribution isn't fixed from the originals, and the is still that 10 level gap from Giovanni to the elite 4

I think LGPE did a better job in terms of pokemon variety, but the sheer amount of content cannot be beaten, FRLG are the best incarnations of KAAAAAAAAAANTOOOOIIIIII

It was cool but did fuck over some people with their work/school schedule. Some people just don't play games during the day.
I always thought the day/night system could work if you could change in-game time, and maybe if it worked off a different timer and wasn't linked to real time- basically literally what Xenoblade Chronicles did, where the day/night cycles pretty fairly spaced and you have complete control to change it whenever in case you were looking for something time-specific.
The argument that comes up there is "if you're gonna give me that much control why have the system at all", and the answer there boils down to personal preference, world building, and night time tracks tend to be kino if there's a difference between them.

Gotta disagree. I've played these games countless times since release and just finished a playthru last week (pic related). Compared to the best games in the series, FRLG is pretty stale and empty. HGSS may have spoiled me, but FRLG seemed to have aged poorly as remakes. Aside from mechanics upgrades from gens 2 and 3 like move-pool updates and held items, there's not much here to get excited about. You can't even get gen2 cross-evos until post game, what's the point?

The audio and visual aesthetics are pretty unimaginative and uninteresting. Everyone agreed back then that the music remixes were really bland and milquetoast, too (which probably is fitting for Kanto as a region, but at least RBY are still charming). The Sevii islands are nice for adding an extra two hours of game play and seeing a few wild Johto mons, but what after you easily complete every island? Catch all Unown?

FRLG are the sufficient Kanto games you can easily run through, nice for dex completion and all, but the best games in the series have their reputations because they're more than just being basically playable.

Wish we could’ve accessed the Pichu, Igglybuff, Cleffa, Crobat, Bellossom, Politoed, Slowking, Steelix, Tyrogue, Hitmontop, Blissey, Kingdra, Scizor, Smoochum, Elekid, Magby, Espeon, Umbreon and Porygon2 before the post game though. Same with the Johto pokemon that were only found in Kanto too (Houndour, Larvitar, etc.) that would’ve made FRLG more interesting.

based and redpilled. 2004- 2012 was the golden age. The only core series games that aren't 10/10 during that time were DP.

I may be biased because it was my first Gen, but personally I find all Gen 3 games the most replayable games in the series. Even though Gen 4 and 5 may be technically better, you can just pick up a Gen 3 game literally on any device and play. The DS games have a second screen that can be very annoying if you're playing anywhere that isn't your DS.

That being said, I wish FRLG would let you evolve your crossgens during the main story and let you trade with RSE from the start. Playing the whole game with the 151 is fun the first few times but it reaches a point where you've already used all of them and you want to experience the game in a fresh way. I usually have to hack the national dex in or play a 386 hack now to enjoy FRLG, but it is still a phenomenal game.

This autism of mine is what prevents me from buying Swoosh anyway. I know I'll hate the game if all I can play with is the regional dex. The fun of replaying Pokémon games is using different team combinations and Pokémon you wouldn't normally use.

Maybe anon means the inability to get mons that weren't in the original 151, even mons like crobat, meaning every time your golbat levelled up before the postgame you'd watch the evolution cutscene for no real reason.
