Honestly I think people only complained about the sm story BECAUSE of the cutscenes.

Ignoring the cutscenes, it was a top-tier story for a pokemon game (just below gen 5 imo - no im not a gen5fag btw), and changed up a lot of the formula.

My problem with SM's story is that it blew its load too early every time. The prolouge cutscene with Lillie running away from Aether Paradise, The Team Skull Grunts immediately blowing Gladion's cover after you fight him, Faba acting high and mighty before inviting you to Aether Paradise. It's not even foreshadowing at that point anymore. The only potentially surprising thing left is Skull and Aether working together rather than being separate factions

The problem with this game is that it got rushed the fuck out by the middle of the game. After the first 4 gyms it felt like rush hour getting to the next one incredibly fast with nothing happening in between.

All final 4 gym challenges (except Melony's) were just fucking battle gauntlets because they couldn't come up with anything else. That Spikemuth ""town""" is literally a fucking street with nothing in it. Poor man's Po Town from SM.

90% of the houses and rooms have absolutely nothing. No hidden items there. The only thing you can interact with is the TV, and that's it.

This game had a really solid start with the towns, the early wild area, and reaching Motostoke, but then it all fucking nosedived after Kabu's gym.

The whole catching raising and battling Pokemon makes for a unique and fun gameplay experience.

No story is the best possible story a Pokemon game can have. I'm here to go on an adventure, get into some battles and catch some Pokemon. I don't need anything more than a vague premise and and end goal to go on. Add in some NPCs around towns for a little worldbuilding if you want.

SwSh is centered on the atmosphere of the league challenge with minimal plot and has cutscenes where there clearly shouldn't be any 90% of the time. The atmosphere of the game could have been built in so many other, better ways like letting us enter half the decorative buildings and actually making routes.

In my perfect world, the Ultra Beasts would’ve been boss Pokémon scattered throughout the story causing chaos and raising the tension over time as more dangerous ones start appearing, building up to a finale where you finally find out who’s behind the ultra wormholes appearing. Nihilego appearing and that’s it was such a missed opportunity and I’m convinced the Ultra Beasts WERE going to be a part of the story at one point but got shoved into the postgame when they ran out of time and had to rush the game out again.

I'm probably the minority here, but that never bothered me. I always saw it as the game reinforcing that the player isn't going through their journey alone. That's why when shit hits the fan for Lillie the MC feels involved because that's someone that has been traveling with them since the beginning. Admittedly, an option to fast-forward the dialogue would have helped with people's reception, but I'd rather that than just not have a proper story like we got here.

No. Just adding more story doesn't make it more or less proper and cutscenes are forced storytelling, but they're not the only method of storytelling.

A fun thing about Gen 5 and N was the implicit storytelling we got about him rather than the explicit. Optional NPCs that told us about his past and motivations. The impact of entering his room and drawing all of your own conclusions. Fighting his always-changing teams to tell you that he's just calling on whatever wild Pokemon are there with him at the time and they trust him to actually be the chosen one they're building up to later.

I think if they really wanted to, they could've done a lot of things to give lillie the same amount of exposure/development without it being all purely dialog cutscenes. And like, they kind of do it. In her brother. He basically got as much, if not more development than Lillie within the course of SuMo, but isn't complained about nearly as much beyond his base character type/personality just existing. You get to learn about him by battling and teaming up with him and traveling with him through bases and puzzles.

I fucking hate Gen 5's story and the fact that it standardized pokemon games having long railroaded segments of characters yapping in every area of the game to reiterate stuff that was already said.

However, I will admit that Gen 5 did do something clever by having N's and Ghetsis' pokemon teams allude to their history or match their circumstances at the moment.

The island challenge isn’t a story, it’s just standard pokemon gameplay with trials replacing gyms. There’s no actual narrative attached to it beyond “hey all young trainers do this thing, you should too.” The actual STORY of the game is Lillie’s family drama, and you’re just along for the ride. Hell, Gladion is supposedly one of your rivals but he has no believable reason to be so. He has no actual connection to the player, he’s only our “rival” because he’s Lillie’s brother and Lillie is the actual protagonist.

I really enjoyed Team Yell. They were a great organic roadblock system, and while I liked Skull more I like that Gamefreak is pushing the "evil team" stuff because it was getting stale. Then she wants to go to Poni Island to use the legendaries to stop her mother's plans. Since she can't fight we're the ones who do the dirty work, because I'd argue she does try to avoid the worst case scenario

Honestly Pokemon's issue is they want to build a party RPG cast but they're not putting the work into it.

Like look at SM. Hau, and Gladion feel like party members through most of the game but it's kind of awkward since they aren't. Same with Hop. He's with you almost the entire game but it all amounts to nothing.

Yeah, I'll grant that especially since it sucked in BW2 when the story was a lot shittier with purrloin lad, and you could probably trace its roots back to gen 3-4 when we started getting the world calamity legendary storylines and characters like Cynthia. But stuff like Ghetsis' Hydreigon backstory implications are exactly the kind of thing that's neat about non-cutscene methods of storytelling since 80% of those details are just within the character design.

Personally I love character interactions too, but cutscenes aren't the only way to do it, and especially not forced, unskippable, frequent ones.
A thing I really love and wish they would do more often is characters teaming up with you for double battles, since it feels like you only ever get 2 or 3 of those moments per game. Lillie joining you for one against team skull to show her Z growth or whatever would've felt better than her just saying it and buying a new outfit and then nothing changes.

Lillie only occupies the evil team story and even then Team Skull is much more related to the island challenge story. Also Gladion is your rival because he's a hired goon when you meet him specifically hired to screw with the player character. Also most of Lillie's story relates to how you make her feel anyway.

The thing is that we're playing a blank state character and the whole point of that is that anyone can self-insert into them. As such, the only story we are given is our adventures in Alola which includes taking the Island challenges and helping Lillie. Yes, the "story" is about Lillie and her family, but I think what matters is that we're experiencing it as through the eyes of our blank-state protagonist which makes it their story.

But Lillie's focus is almost entirely related to her bond with the player. She has a role in the story, and she has an arc but that arc is entirely dependent on you and your actions. You're also the one that deals with all the shit. The only thing Lillie does without you is steal Nebby before you meet her.

In gen 8 there are various points where Leon pushes you aside and deals with things off screen. Stuff like that never happens in gen 7. You're always the character in the center of everything. You're a kid helping their friend.

Besides, it's no use discussing this with me, because a lot of people (whether it's vp or 5ch or what else) have agreed with this since the release and just call the game "Lillie's story". And I don't like that, because despite the fact she gets the most of the cutscenes, she is still useless and the character is too cliche and boring. Wouldn't mind if she was actually interesting.

They should have just expanded a bit more on these guy's concept.
Instead of an "our story" GF's been pushing with the other characters being tied to the main plot, taking up so much screen time it might as well be their story, they should have just made a "my story" with you encountering recurring NPCs with their own mini-arcs you can optionally go through.
Put in Johto's phone feature and you can even have a "connections" theme were you make connections with new people as you go on your journey, unlike the current GF stories where you spend time with the same 1-2 characters that have always been there since the start.

The plotline with rose was pretty awful, but I actually enjoyed the more simplistic take on the story. Putting emphasis on the gym challenge was good, it was basically the red and blue story done better.

This is one of those things RPGs solved a decade ago. Party Chat in games like DQ4 allow you to get a little extra info without causing roadblocks. It not only helps those who wish to ignore extra dialogue, but also creates more opportunities for those who want more.

SM cast should have just been following you, or at least Lillie who can't battle anyway. But I think most would accept Hau following you but not helping in battles over what we got.

I dunno about other people but my issue with the cutscenes in SM was that most of them were superfluous, they were window dressing for the characters and didn't need to be either mandatory or cutscenes, hell they even do it right at one stage with an optional Gladion interaction in the hotel on Route 8 where you get a snippet of his character with his aggressive personality but it's not made into some mandatory cutscene the player has to watch. It's ironic that Sword & Shield doesn't even fix this either, I like Hop's character but the start of the game up until about the Bede vs. Hop Battle is plagued by his frequent unnecessary interactions, the player should be able to just ignore most of the ones that aren't battles or key to progressing the game forward (such as the Train Station interaction).

SuMo doesn't have a better story. It's too intrusive, it's barely about you and your journey is secondary to Lillie. Ultra fixed this somewhat. I'd take Gen 1 or 2's level of no story again over anything we've gotten since. I don't want to be a special snowflake the world is depending on. I don't want Legendary Pokemon shoved into the plot. Let them be Legendary Pokemon. They may or may not exist to most people. The villain's plot shouldn't revolve around something that may not exist. I don't want a villain that's trying to take over the world or whatever. I don't want a thousand intrusive characters showing up every time I get to a new area. I don't want to witness the bland characters getting their generic "development". I just want to play the fucking game. The less story Pokemon has the better it is.

First of all, GF would never make a game with the scope of BOTW, secondly, even if they were godly developers, the game would end up much closer to something like Fallout, where you have a bunch of areas with high level pokemon you can't explore because you can't catch them, and everywhere else you just have some crappy open terrain with nothing on it but grass keeping you from going to the next town.
Routes and dungeons add structure.

Ideally, what would make more sense is a couple dozen routes that are very large and maze-like.

Have the routes branch a bit with hidden items and optional dungeons, occasionally have a route be an open area, and let the player sorta go where they want if they're strong or clever enough to get by. It'd be kind of like Octopath Traveler.

It's almost correct. There's like 2 progression keys dropped off bosses, and you need to do the bells before the second part opens up, but apart from those couple things you can do as you please.

Anyway, most games should adopt Dark Souls' level design, but I wouldn't call that "open world". You're still forced to go through linear parts to get places. You can't go anywhere you want.

Generally, with the exception of the examples you posted, you can go to most areas in any order. A couple places locked behind story cues or whatever, sure, but other areas gatekept by just enemies that are stronger than you. If you can find a way to get past them it’s all up for grabs.

Also the areas in general are dope. Lots of nooks and crannies to explore, most are connected in some way, storytelling though environment, etc. Kinda wanna replay DS now desu

Roadblocks are good.
Union Cave is my favorite location in Johto, because the basic path clues the player in that there's more to explore, but you can't do it right away because you don't have the HMs for it. Open world where you can simply swim across or climb the mountain top ruins the entire design and visuals of the route.
This isn't an empty open world, this is a hallway with hidden doors and floors.

I miss HMs. I know they were annoying in practice, but you actually felt like you were on an adventure with your pokemon and they were helping you overcome barriers in the overworld, not just in combat.
The way they implemented them in SuMo was a kind of compromise, but it's not the same.

They were like the items you get in a Metroid game, and I really don't like how they just phazed them out in the later games.
They removed the keys, and therefore removed the locks, so now you can just go anyhwere and nowhere is special.

Small details can make the roadblocks seem more organic and less like memes. Kanto Route 2's shortcut back to Viridian would be more convincing as an "overgrown path" if the entire shortcut was filled with bushes to cut, instead of the bush at the very end. The entrance to Diglett's cave wouldn't seem so obnoxiously easy to fence hop if the cave entrance were bigger and more mound-like.

You can do a good story without excessive cutscences, look at gen 5. People didn’t like cutscenes in SuMo because it was every. Single. New. Route you had Hau or Kukui or Lillie bothering the fuck out of you and grinding all progress to a stop. It was so stupid. The story was good, even UltraSuMo’s was okay, if less good.
