i remember one or two mining areas and the forest with mushrooms but those were so straightforward they felt more like prettied up routes than dungeons

You just now realized this? Iwata is the reason GS has Kanto. GF can't code, he saved their ass so much. Look at the time of Iwata's death and the quality of Nintendo. He was the last of the true programmers that made games because they liked to.

I'm not giving a pass to how streamlined level design has become but the reason we remember places like Silph Co and the Caves as these grueling labyrinths isn't because they're super tightly designed dungeons it's because of random encounters being obnoxious. The added monotony of Zubats swooping down on your ever 5-10 steps makes the places feel a lot more complex, especially when you take a wrong turn and know that now you're going to have to deal with 5 geodudes just to get back on task. I miss more interesting routes but I don't necessarily miss the illusion of good dungeons.

That's why repel exists. If the pokemon are higher levelled though then it's annoying yeah but they give good EXP while you explore.

Pokemon in caves/mines on Sword/Shield shows up in the overworld so this shouldn't be a big problem like before.

Because they just had to trace them and then use existing tiles for the graphics, it was more conceptual than technical. Harder to do with 3d, so instead of making efforts they go for the simpler solution.

That's a square room layout with one exit. Copying that to be a bunch of standalone disconnected rooms is easy. Making a dungeon, with the way GF does graphics, is different.
