S/M, US/UM, and OR/AS: Wha Happun'?

Could somebody explain or point me to why these games are so divisive? I've had interest in playing them but I keep seeing people hate them and I'm not entirely sure why.

For S/M and US/UM, people hate the fact that the game always tells you where to go, holding your hand for the entire game like it's afraid that you would get lost otherwise. And while the story was interesting, many cutscenes dragged far too long, making playing it a second time an absolute bore (unless you're reaaaaly into the characters).

US/UM In particular, many felt it an unnecessary and greedy third version, in a time where DLCs and Updates exist (consider that it came our ONE year after Sun and Moon). It has many improvements over the first ones(Surf Mantine is a good way to farm BP, and the Post Game gets much more content, like the Rainbow Episode), but it aggravates the fact that they could've added that stuff in the original Sun and Moon.

OR/AS felt for many like a half-backed remake, taking most thing from Ruby and Sapphire and almost nothing from Emerald (the absence of the Battle Frontier is the most obvious example).

I personally enjoyed all of these games (US/UM less than the others), but they have their flaws.

SM were essentially betas. USUM have all the features SM and any gen first set of games should have. The true third version we never got (see E/Pt/B2W2) should have had even more features than USUM.

ORAS had issues but would have been much better with a battle frontier and a couple of improved areas. Between XY and ORAS however, you could catch all pokemon in a gen 6 game, which people often tend to overlook.

The common thread between these games is Ohmori as main director. All of his games thus far, including SwSh, have this emphasis on story and character interactions over gameplay and player experience. ORAS filled the campaign with more frequent interruptions to keep the player on a track, like forcing you to go the Contest Hall before you can leave Slateport, forcing Lati@s onto your party, having May show up to heal your team on certain routes, etc. It also removed much of the changes and content that made Emerald the definitive Hoenn experience in Gen 3, like Gym Leader teams or the Battle Frontier. It's an easier, more on-rails version of RSE with less content. Following that, SM is practically a visual novel, filled with cutscenes, unskippable dialogue, and constant handholding through the story. USUM was directed by Iwao, but is largely the same experience as SM. They even double down on the presence of Rotom as a 'guide', and he chats you up even more than before.

Basically Pokemon under Ohmori is trying to be a story driven JRPG for babies.

Technically Ohmori happened since XY, and you can see the cracks with that game as he was a Planning Director for that game, but luckily Masuda was there to tard wrangle him and control his autism.

Unfortunately, Masuda was getting old and he needed someone to act as main director and Ohmori was the only eligible one for that role. That's why Lets Go was Masuda's last directed game.

Ohmori put a huge focus on the railroading, the lack of dungeons or side areas, the focus on story and dialogue dumps, the characters that hog up YOUR spotlight (Zinnia, Lillie, Hop, etc), the lack of postgame, and so on. They're still fine games, just on the lower end of the Pokemon series.

It kind of ruins Sun's story and the Necrozma thing is a waste of time. You think SwSh is linear? The Ultra World is literally just one corridor and a tower.
