Is shiny chaining broken?

It seems like chaining in this game doesn't work half the time. People doing the same method are going about 5x over odds half the time while others are getting them at around 400 on average. The odds are supposed to be similar to SOS but we're seeing completely different results.
The Masuda method seems much more reliable this gen.

i do think there's still some stuff to be skeptical about (i don't know if we have 100% proof on if these are the odds or if we're chaining correctly or not) but yeah considering there's been some people that've chained for over 3000 (which is in odds for just normal encountering) it might be that either
A: people are just getting extremely unlucky (like with most methods, i've had times where on the odd occasion i hunt in lgpe, it takes up to 4 days to even see one).
B: gamefreak fucked up the coding for the shiny odds somehow (which, considering them, might be the true answer, but i'm going with A).

I'm honestly skeptical about how chaining works this gen. I was on a 600+ chain and never saw a shiny.

My sister was in the same boat while chaining Nickit (600+). She switched to Sobble and got a shiny in under 150 eggs.

I do hope we get a bit more of a data mine when it comes to shiny odds and chaining methods. They found data for increasing odds but the issue is the fact that we still don't know what increases or breaks the chain.

For reference, I'm on a chain of about 1500 for Rookidee with no luck.

I've done a fair few chains in previous games, none lasted this long. not even straight-up soft resetting for legendaries.

Have you beaten the first gym yet? A friend of mine has chained 2000+ rookidees with no luck. We're starting to think it doesn't work until after the first gym, but this is just a hypothesis.

That's exactly why I suspect it. Only Game Freak would be shitty enough to do so, and they've already fucked over shiny hunters in multiple other ways. (Not shiny locking uncatchable static encounters, shiny locking the starters, not making shinies appear in the overworld despite doing so in LGPE, etc.)
We're just going to have to wait. I'd recommend beating the first gym then resuming your hunt just in case.

There are enough dataminers to go around. So far only a few people are skilled enough to mod in old Pokemon. SciresM said they'd make a dev tool to speed things along.

It's not about the time taken. It's about how frequently people are going over odds, and by a large margin. I found a shiny Cranidos before my friend found a shiny Rookidee.

These exact arguments came up when LGPE was released. Wahh wahh there are so many people going way over the known odds, serebii / dataminers MUST be wrong, there's something else going on! There was a big controversy around it all.
