I'm not the same guy but I understand why it's a surprise to him (and to me as well).

In these 8 or so years I never thought of this particular Pokemon too much and the fanart always seem to fail to portrait this detail about her.

There's always at least one anon who is completely out of the loop that there's a running joke about instantly assuming X pokemon is female or can only be female, and that there will be other jokes around that context.

That's the translator's fault. The original Japanese doesn't use a gendered pronoun. In fact, in the same interview they say Serperior is based off Lady Oscar, who's a female crossdresser.
