XY was a bland game that was saved by its new visuals.

The mistake was going to 3D at all. But changing XY to 2D wouldn't have changed the fact that it had minimal substance.

No. It had limited content on its own already. Changing to this style would only salvage the visuals but if they added more, then perhaps.

I would have enjoyed it aesthetically speaking, but the story and gameplay would still be dogshit. Now, if you had literally anyone else other than Ohmori or Masuda, PLUS the same style, then it could have been kino. But alas, that is not the timeline we live in. We live in the clown world timeline.

The benefit to staying 2D is that gamefreak could potentially focus those resources on making more areas and content, which would be the ideal. It's not a guarantee that they do so though

3D is not automatically good, the games looked like complete ass and I'm sure them needing 3D assets was at least part of the reason the games were so barebones.
