I'm a casual pokemon player "tourist". I didn't even play gen 6 at all. But sword and shield feel pretty much on par with gen 7 to me, heck I'd say it does a few things better like gym battles

I'm not saying it's great, it just seems like more of the same to me and dont really get the massive outrage

Nobody gives a shit about the main game desu.

Its all about the multiplayer, the team building, and the shiny hunting since the main game itself just dies after the first dex competition (which everybody gets done in 1 day to a week at most with the GTS.)

Sword and Shield are just inferior in every way, including story which is already the worst aspect of mainline RPGs, while taking away Pokemon
The only other first versions that Sword and Shield is only marginally better than are RGB and RS and those are literally the beginning of the franchise and a very harsh transitional period both over 15 years ago

ORAS in truth had the Pokemon GO boost. It was the most recent game available when Pokemon GO was out, and was a much more immediate gratification than preordering Sun/Moon as the alternative option.
It’s only anecdotal, but I remember going into GameStop for 20th anniversary codes and to look for the TCG mythical boxes. Every time I went there after GO released there was someone buying a 3DS and ORAS saying they wanted to try to get back into the main series because of GO.

in fact the real sum up of the new games is that gf stopped carrying about the region design, for caves, dungeons, routes, towns and details that have been there since forever, sword and shield are big, but they feel like unfinished with the lacking overworld
