That was literally its design for one game (Japanese Blue) and was changed back to the original 1 row of spikes design in the very next game and for all games after. This is from the same art set that has Venomoth with big yellow spots on the wings but I doubt you even fuckin know about that

I wonder if this could be possible on a grander scale. Astral Chain had an unlockable pixelization filter on its camera, so maybe it could be used like that, but also with a heightmap applied to the model with 2-bit shading + one color per Pokémon.

Here’s the art created for the original red and green and the design we still see today. Sugimori made multiple revisions for pokémon for the second round of art made for Blue and almost none of them stuck.

Yea, I'd play a Gen 1 remake in this style, so long as the outlines were more distinct so that it's not TOO hard to see somethings. Keep the color pallet to GB shades with enhanced shadows and highlights.
