everything had energetic idle animations, and the move animations were top-notch

You're taking 'replace' too literally. They replace the Kantomons in their niches (such as Woobat replacing Zubat as the bat Pokémon that appears in every cave), they don't completely replace them in every respect.

I mean it straight up was when it came to its regional dex, plus it's like the only story so far that isnt like a world ending calamity/ heavily references other stories asides from maaaybe gen one if I recall. It also just tonally and setting wise feels "different" and it isnt quite like a mostly sprite game like the games prior and isnt quite a fully 3d game either. Gen four dabbled in 3d but no where near as much as 5 did, but it's no where near the level of x and y either.

What am I missing? That's only 24/156 Unova Pokemon, and most of them are still unique even if they match up with a Kanto Pokemon (e.g. mushroom Pokeball instead of an exploding Pokeball).

It was the most legitimaye reboot of the franchise. Even though it's not really isolated.

By the second gym you can already read books of Sinnoh poffins and about the weather institute in Hoenn. And the nps add a lot into this and among other things. Unova really is a well fleshed region that try something new yet wanting to be part of the rest.

Every generation felt like it built off of the generations that came before it. Adding new ways to play the game, new tweaks and alterations and what not but the games still gave you alot of freedom to explore and play the game. Gen 4 in particular felt like a definitive conclusion to the franchise and it felt like everything had come full circle, from the godmon, the remake of the original conclusion coming out right after, the sequels to the spinoffs introduced in gen 3 that really let the franchise come into its own; everything just felt right and it kind of felt like we didn't need another pokemon game after until one actually did come out. The fixation on the story is probably the biggest one though since it was when pokemon felt like less of an RPG and more of one of those Sony story games. We saw lots of innovation with the series but now changes just felt like gimmicks (e.g. seasons). Me and everyone else I knew was kind of feeling that pokemon fatigue similar to that from the gen 2 crowd. It really just feels like the breaking point where the cracks finally started to show.

There was nothing wrong with the dex expansion because they didn't go overboard. They had the good sense to not have the old Pokémon outnumber the new ones, so Unova kept its identity and didn't end up feeling like a shitty romhack.

Im just gonna come right out and say I enjoyed Unova mimicking the kanto dex.
Felt like you're playing an alternate universe version of black and white. Except the region looks geographically and culturally completely different (80s japan vs modern america)

I'm in two minds when it comes to the unova mons. I much preferred having a completely fresh experience with an entry for the first time since gen 1, and most of the designs are superior to kanto, but it also resulted in a lot of bloat and that kind of mentality is why gamefreak is struggling to manage almost 1000 pokemon in a single game. They don't need to add equivalents to existing pokemon in each gen, just add a smaller amount of meaningful pokemon or outright replace then and don't have shit like paras return if dwebble exists.
