I think the fact that Breath of the Wild exists on the same system is what makes the mediocrity stand out. GameFreak is competing with console games for the first time, in an HD environment. The image of small indie devs making cute handheld games has been lost and we suddenly expect them to compete with The Witcher, Elser Scrolls, etc

And I must add it's still their fault. GameFreak has had the Switch dev tools sent by Nintendo before almost anyone else and before Switch's release so they could prepare for it with time. And obviously full Nintendo support if they need it. Also they already made Let's GO previously. There is no excuse for this quality.

I literally never expected either of these things from any Pokémon game. If you dislike SWSH and you’re a casual player who never used the Battle Frontier then you wouldn’t like any old Pokémon game if you were playing for the first time.

Feels good to not have expectations and appreciate the qualities the games have regardless of what some random reviewer for a British CNN wants me to think.

I just finished a side mission in Astral Chain that had like 20 or so goons fighting against you at any given time with minimal slowdown. Also because they were low tier goons they were constantly exploding into tons of particles all over the fucking place. That game runs beautifully with some exceptions, I truly do not understand how or why GameFreak is so fucking bad at optimizing.

The release of the Switch Lite and Link's Awakening are proof that Nintendo is going to do 2 types of titles: Mobile friendly for switch Lite and more powerful for people who use switch docked. SwSh is for the former.

Pokemon mainline games, with the exception of Gen I and II, have always looked meh on their respective consoles, the peak of it all being a 3D spiral bridge and animated sprites on 2D games and the petting/camping on 3D games.
Pokemon games are for the battle system, team building, etc, everything else is a nice bonus. Theres a reason people still play Showdown and its not for the graphics or music bruv. But since you zoomers only got a hold of a handheld 3 years ago all you care is MUH GRAPX, but its ok. you'll grow

Oracle of Ages and Seasons, which were improved versions of the LA engine, kicked the ass of RB/GS despite also being EOL Gameboy releases.
I can't fault GSC though because the amount of content was so massive it maxed out the carts. That's a small price to pay for overworld animations.
