It was ubers back in Gen 3 when there were few pokemon that could play around it. Gen 4-7 introduced new pokemon that could play around it. Gen 8 cuts a significant amount of pokemon, many of which could play around it, and it's ubers again. I don't even play competitive and I could figure that out.

No it was ubers in Gen 3 because there was almost nothing that could play around encore counter/coat. Leftovers could've easily been solved by banning it on them like many official tourneys did. Gen 4 straight up introduced stuff that could snuff it and that continued until gen 6 and M-Sableye completely walled it.

Not true. In B2W2 meta, Shadow Tag Gothitelle and Shadow Tag Wynaut were both BL, and Gothorita and Wynaut were at the bottom of the barrel in NU. In gen 6 they suspect tested the ABILITIES, which is what got Shadow Tag and Arena Trap banned. In gen 7 they did the same thing, suspect testing the ABILITIES instead of the pokemon itself.

Dugtrio, Diglett, and Trapinch all have Arena Trap, but they all have different level of potency. Gothitelle, Gothorita, Gothita, Wobbuffet, and Wynaut all have Shadow Tag, but they all have different level of potency.

Suspecting the ability instead of the pokemon itself is pure laziness. Quick banning without a suspect test at all is even lazier and extremely corrupt because players aren't even allowed to VOTE.

Difference is, one is a risk you're taking and the other is forcing your opponent to play the odds. Banning evasion is straightforward enough, but dealing with Focus Blast RNG would mean... preventing people from giving themselves a 30% chance to miss? Modding the game to give everyone Aura Sphere instead? It's outside the scope of what Smogon should reasonably do imo. Ice Beam and Brightpowder are more fair comparisons but the raw % to happen makes them less of an issue, and ultimately there's only so much you can do to reduce RNG in a turn-based RPG. In the case of Ice Beam you have to weigh the relatively unlikely RNG factor with the implications of modding the game or outright removing an essential move (that's used for a lot more than just RNG cheese).

SD on the switch to deal with Ferrothorn with Drain-punch and Knock off Corsola. it doesn't even need sucker punch because Toxicroak outspeeds them all.

Pretty sure a Nasty plot set does the same but deals with Ferrothorn even harder.

No, hazards are not in anyway comparable to evasion. Smogon sucks and there's plenty of shit to criticisize them for but this is not one of them.

Countering hazards requires just a single moveslot (or a magic bouncer) on a single member of your team, and the wide combined distribution of Defog/Rapid Spin/Magic Bounce means you have a lot of options to pick from. Depending on your team composition, you may not even have to run hazard removal at all. And in gen 8 we also get Heavy Duty Boots and Court Change to offer new counterplay.

On the other side, you can't counter evasion with just a single moveslot on a single Pokemon. Perfect accuracy moves just aren't going to work for every Pokemon. Yes, you'll never miss Aura Sphere, but just because you can hit Double Team Toxapex with a move doesn't mean you're going to be able to KO with it. You can't counter evasion with just a single move.

Choice Banded icicle crash does about 50% to the Pex so with some hazards or a lucky flinch it is quite possible.

That being said Choice Scarf is by far more common.

Always at least 2HKOs if you're at +2, OHKOs if you Dynamax and it's physically defensive. The biggest difference is that since you're using a special set, you don't give a shit about being burned and you can run Timid 0 Attack IVs to give it as little Strength Sap healing as possible, so you should generally just win that matchup without having to go for the one-shot (Life Orb can wear you down a bit though).

Magic Bounce counters Roar/Whirlwind. Haze is a better option but it (and roar/whirlwind too) relies on your hazer actually being able to check whatever the opponent is stacking evasion on. The only really viable hazer is Toxapex, and that's not going to be able to come in and haze on, say, an Excadrill or Toxtricity.

Evasion clause has been with Smogon (and its predecessors) from almost the very start, in the Gen 1 days. It's from a time where evasion genuinely was OP and centralizing. It's a little lame that Smogon's never really tested it since like the Gen 3 days but there's bigger fish to fry with them. I don't get why it's anti-Smogonfags' hill to die on. Go play VGC if it bugs you so much.

That's only because of Intimidate. The ability itself is way too useful and Incineroar is the best user of it thanks to Fake Out, U-turn and etc.
But it doesn't centralize the meta, it doesn't need much countering compared to like Xerneas.
