If you're looking for an RPG to sink a ton of hours into, play Dragon Quest V. It's the best one, in my opinion.
It has a great story, fantastic music, and memorable characters. It also allows you to recruit and train monsters, which is fun, especially if your Monster Team beats a Boss. lol
It's available on a lot of platforms, too. SNES, PS2, DS, and Mobile. DS version is my favorite, but Mobile and PS2 versions aren't that bad, either. If you want to experience the original, go for the SNES one. It's still a great game on that platform.
